What began as a technical inspection of the test model of Wenova.eu’s truck–trailer combination turned into a discovery: The Intelligent Fifth Wheel proved to be crucial for safe autonomous docking. During the Automotive Week 2023 in Helmond, a heavily loaded trailer was autonomously parked using a trailer mover — without a driver, but with fully autonomous fifth-wheel control.
The motivation: TNO wanted to demonstrate how autonomous shunting works with a trailer mover during Automotive Week 2023. For this, they were looking for a system that could ensure coupling, angle measurement, and safety without human intervention.

During the event, a heavily loaded trailer was fully autonomously docked. The locking mechanism, camera feeds, and steering assistance were all automatically controlled by the system.
